Is being authentic too cringe?

"Authentic" Ew, did you just cringe? Because I did.

It's overused and feels cringe because it's incredibly important. It's more than a buzzword that every business coach, social media mentor or entrepreneurial guru tells you.

But while it's an incredibly overused word, the actual action, the "how" is stupidly elusive when it doesn't need to be. One thing that I always get stuck on when it comes to being authentic, is what does that actually look like? How do you show up being authentic in your business and brand? And how do you know if you're being genuinely authentic instead of fake authentic?

Wonder no more. Here's how.

Don't just regurgitate your story.

Share your whole journey -- not just the highlight reel. Share the challenges, the ups and personal anecdotes, giving a little glimpse into the genuine human side behind your brand. Reveal the not-so-great parts, because that's what your audience could also be struggling with. It's that juiciness that people want to hear, what they will instantly connect with, because it's a common thread. They feel closer to you because you've experienced similar challenges. They see themselves in you. This is what creates that emotional connection. Your audience begins to trust you and your 'authentic self'.

And then, you lean on that existing relationship to talk about how you can help them.

Your differentiator is your authenticity.

The thing that makes you unique will be the thing that sets you apart in a sea of same same. Become recognisable because of your brand presence and consistency. Use your brand, your fonts, colours, logos, templates and more to ensure you're keeping it real. And it's not just your brand. Think your tone of voice, messaging, content — it all needs to be consistent. However you do it, is your authentic way. Lean into that.
